Play Rangers in Banwell

As most are aware we now have the Play Rangers in Banwell on a Tuesday and a
Wednesday between 3:30 and 6:30. The rangers are there to promote play in
the age range of 10 - 14 Please follow the link to find out more on the

New Specialist Domestic Violence Courts

New Specialist Domestic Violence Courts for Bristol, Bath and North Somerset

New Specialist Domestic Violence Courts have been set up in Bristol, Bath
and North Somerset Magistrates' courts, following the success of SDVCs
(Specialist Domestic Violence Courts) already established in Yate (North
Avon Magistrates' court), Bridgwater (Sedgemoor Magistrates' court) and
Yeovil (South Somerset Magistrates' court).

Specialist Domestic Violence Courts are dedicated to making the victim feel
as safe as possible. They operate on a set day in the week with one or more
courtrooms dealing solely with domestic violence cases. A police officer is
present throughout the court proceedings and a specialist domestic violence
advocate is assigned to provide support to victims from beginning to end.
Victims can also enter the court through a separate entrance and have their
own waiting area, away from their abuser and his/her family. All staff
(police officers, CPS prosecutors, HM court staff, Magistrates, Witness Care
Officers, Probation Officers and Witness Service volunteers) involved in
these courts have attended domestic abuse awareness sessions.

SDVCs have proved highly effective in increasing conviction rates for this
abhorrent type of crime. The first SDVC in Avon and Somerset was set up at
Sedgemoor Magistrates' Court in Bridgwater in 2005 and it is continuing to
make a difference. In the period from October to December 07, this court had
a conviction rate of 83%. To put this in context, the national domestic
violence conviction rate for the same period averaged 68% and 74% for Avon &
Somerset as a whole.

Commenting on the new courts, Michael Nicholls from CPS Avon & Somerset
said:

'The specialist domestic violence courts are a fundamental part of our
effort to improve the support and care we provide for victims of domestic
violence. We are committed to providing a first class prosecution service.
By providing specialist training for prosecutors and better support systems
for victims we are seeing a tangible difference in performance. In the last
three years we have seen how successful SDVCs can be and I am delighted that
the whole of Avon & Somerset is now covered by them.
'Perpetrators must be brought to justice, and when they are our specialist
prosecutors and support services will be there to assist victims every step
of the way.'

Plant Sale - 10th May

Banwell in Bloom and 1st Banwell Scout and Guide Group are holding a
combined Plant Sale with Book and Bake on Saturday 10th May at the Village
Hall, from 10.00a.m. until 12,30 p.m. There will also be a Home Made Cake
Stall , Bric-a-Brac, and Second Hand Books on Sale. The 1st Banwell Scouts
and Guide Group will be serving refreshments including Teas, Coffees, Bacon
Sandwiches,and soft Drinks.
Proceeds will be split between the two prganisations, Banwell in Bloom to
buy bedding plants for the tubs in the village, and the Scout and Guide
Group to pay for Electrical maintenance work in the Scout and Guide
Headquarters.

By now most most villagers have received a copy of the Parish News. Inside
this you will have found a Yellow leaflet called 'Our Banwell' This would
have asked you to write your views on what you feel Banwell needs in the
future and how you perceive Banwell at present good or bad.
If you have not filled this in please may I ask you to take 5 minutes and
jot ideas onto the form and post it back into the Green Parish Post Box
located in the Post Office This will help the Parish Plan Steering Committee
formulate a questionnaire to gain a feeling on how you would wish Banwell to
move forward over the next 5 - 10 years. If you have not received your
leaflet please go to www.bpp.ukgo.com and you can download it from there. We
look forward to your replies.
If you feel you may wish to join the steering committee or just come to a
meeting the next meting is on 9 Apr 7:30 in the Scout / Guide hut.

The Local beat officer would like to inform you of an incident that has
caused concern. He believes a recent attempted break in to a residential
property in the village may have been an attempt by the offender to obtain
the keys to a high value car, which was parked on the driveway of the
residence.

He asks that Villagers that have high value vehicles on display outside
their homes take extra care with security and consider fitting an alarm to
the house.

Villages and communities surrounding Weston-super-Mare go under the policing
spotlight next week.

Inspector Liz Keogh and Sergeant David Holtby who head up the neighbourhood
policing team, responsible for the "Worle and villages" area go live on the
police web site to talk to their audiences.

The web chat will take place between 6-7.30pm and will be an opportunity for
people living in the Worle, Milton, Kewstoke. Sandbay, Puxton, Hewish,
Banwell and Bleadon areas to put questions and queries to local
neighbourhood officers.

Inspector Keogh said she hoped many residents would take this opportunity
and log on.

"A lot of the residents may feel sometimes that they don't have as many
opportunities to speak with their police officers as they might like - here
is an excellent chance to put your questions or queries to us.

"We would like to hear from the people of the areas outside
Weston-super-Mare centre about their communities, what their concerns are
and any other issues about crime and disorder they may have. However we will
be more than happy to answer general questions on policing in the
Weston-super-Mare area.

"We would like to hear from people to hear their views on whether they think
we are doing a good job, whether they believe we should be targeting
something in a particular area or want to check what we are doing about a
particular problem. They can contact us on-line and then put their
particular questions and queries.

"If we don't know the answer that evening we will endeavour to find the
information while the live discussion is going on but we will certainly get
back to people as soon as possible after the web chat," confirmed Insp
Keogh.

Force Internet and Multi Media Manager Scott Fulton said: "Web chats are now
held on a regular basis following their successful introduction some four
years ago and are an excellent opportunity for members of the public to take
part in engaging discussions with their local police officers from the
comfort of their own home".

"There is no registration required to join the web chat. Simply log on to
www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/webchat between 6-7.30pm on Wednesday (March
19) to join in.

Indulgence Evening!

Banwell Buddies pre-school and out of school club are holding an Indulgence
Evening. It will be held in the Village Hall on Friday 29th Feb from 7pm
onwards. We will have local holistic therapists, beauticians and company
consultants present, with lots of indulgent treatments and products
available. Treatments will range from Indian Head Massage to Manicures &
Facials and products available for purchase will range from Handbags &
Jewellery to Candles. Tickets cost £3.50 to include a glass of wine or a
non-alcoholic drink and are available in advance from Banwell Buddies or on
the door.

Internet safety for your children - come to a meeting

Concern has been shown regarding children using the Internet and the dangers
they could so easily face online. To address this problem the Police have
organised a parents evening as follows: Monday 3 March 2008 at 7.30pm at
Winscombe School, Moorham Road, Winscombe and Wednesday 12 March 2008 at
7.30pm at the Campus, behind Morrisons, Weston-super-Mare. There will be
expert speakers who will deal with any concerns you may have and give you
some simple advice to reduce the threat. This event is for adults only as
children could find some of its content upsetting. Places are limited so
please call 01934 638141 to book your places ASAP if you would like to
attend.

Banwell Village Car Park

The following email has been received from North Somerset Council.

"I have just returned from Holiday and heard that there may be some
confusion regarding North Somerset Council's West Street car park in Banwell

There are no plans to charge in this car park now or in the future as it is
too small to be cost effective and there would be no other benefit

The site has been part of the Parking Order for a couple of years so that we
can manage it more effectively e.g. encouraging safer parking within lines,
discouraging anti social behaviour and other improper uses of a car park.
So, for the last couple of years and in the future if we catch someone
acting against the Order they may be subject to a fine but that would be the
only occasion they would be charged

We advertise the Parking Order every year as part of the process, which is
why you have seen signs on the site and in papers but please be reassured we
do not plan to make any parking changes in this site"

Bogus Callers

There have been some incidents recently where people have reported to the
police that they have answered the door to cold callers who have been asking
to read their gas and electric meters but the callers have not been
displaying any identity badge and on one occasion, when asked for this, did
not have any to show.

Poppins Community Cafe

The nationally recognised POPPINS Community Cafés are coming to Banwell
Village Hall on 5 March 2008, offering help and support on a variety of
issues, from housing to education.

As well as information about how to get the most from local services, such
as those offered by North Somerset Council, Citizens' Advice Bureau, and Age
Concern, there will also be opportunities to talk to local police and
councillors, plus there will be refreshments and fun activities.

The community cafés have been taking place in various venues across North
Somerset over the last few months and were recently singled out for national
praise by the Government's Improvement and Development Agency for their
impact in helping "hard to reach" groups access local services.
